The subject of our study is the evaluation of the struggle and relations between Sultan Baybars, whose real name was al-Malik al-Zâhir Rüknüddîn al-Sâlihî al-Bundukdârî (d. 676/1277), and the Mongol states of Ilkhanid and Golden Horde. The main problem we address in our study is the level of friendly or hostile relations between the Mongols and Sultan Baybars. One of the important and successful sultans of Turkish history, al-Malik al-Zâhir Rükneddin Baybars ruled as the sultan of the Mamluk State between 1260-1277. He was the commander of the Battle of Aynicâlût, which took place during the reign of Sultan Qutuz, and inflicted a heavy defeat on the Mongols. Baybars, whose star shone after this event, assumed the role of the saviour of the Islamic world and was successful in his fierce struggle against the Mongols. Upon the call of Muînüddin Süleyman Pervane and other statesmen, he took action to save Anatolia from the Mongol invasion and defeated the Mongols heavily in the Battle of Elbistan. In this study, historians of the Baybars period, especially the work of his clerk Ibn Abduzzāhir, were used, as well as the works of contemporary historians. Although there are some studies on the diplomatic relations between Baybars and the Mongols in Turkey, there is a need for more comprehensive studies. This study aims to make a modest contribution to the subject. At the end of the study, it is concluded that Baybars assumed the role of the saviour of the Islamic world as a result of his successful policy, gained a strong ally against the Ilkhanid State thanks to his friendly relations with the Golden Horde, stopped the advance of the Mongols after the Battle of Aynicâlût and the results of the aforementioned war were determined.
